Assam Congress Energizes Grassroots: Bold Resolutions and Dynamic Revamp for Upcoming Panchayat Polls
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) convened an extensive meeting at Rajiv Bhawan, Guwahati, to enhance its organizational framework and strategize for the upcoming Panchayat elections. During the six-hour session, the APCC announced the establishment of district-level Political Affairs Committees within a week. These committees will evaluate district activities, aiming for stronger grassroots connectivity.
A significant focus was on appointing block-level presidents for new constituencies created by delimitation. The district committees will finalize these appointments for state committee approval. APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah specified that new block presidents must be under 50, but current block presidents exceeding this age may continue their roles.
The party formed a dedicated committee to oversee Panchayat election preparations, including MP Rakibul Hussain, former MP Ripun Bora, and senior leader Pranati Phukan, coordinated by General Secretary Sanju Barua. Recommendations for Panchayat candidates must be submitted in writing, with proposers held accountable for results.
District committees have the authority to explore alliances with anti-BJP parties for Panchayat and Autonomous Council elections. Borah noted that Panchayat-level alliances require careful negotiations due to local complexities.
The Congress aims to boost representation by prioritizing diverse socio-cultural groups, such as tea tribes and indigenous communities, for district presidents. Additionally, a digital membership drive has been launched under the guidance of AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh.
Looking forward, the APCC plans meetings with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi by January 2025 to strategize for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, marking a crucial step in fortifying its statewide position.
