Heartwarming: World Chess Champion D Gukesh’s Triumphant Homecoming Ignites Joy at Chennai Airport
World chess champion D Gukesh received an enthusiastic welcome at Chennai airport upon his return from Singapore, where he made history by becoming the youngest world chess champion ever. The 18-year-old defeated China’s Ding Liren with a score of 7.5-6.5, surpassing the previous record set by Garry Kasparov in 1985.
Fans, officials from the Tamil Nadu government, and representatives of the national chess federation gathered in large numbers to greet him. Expressing gratitude, Gukesh said, “Your support gave me a lot of energy. It’s a great feeling to win the world championship.”
Upon his arrival, Gukesh was greeted by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and his alma mater, Velammal Vidyalaya, with flowers and a shawl. His triumph is particularly significant as he is only the second Indian to win the world title, following in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand, who mentored him in Chennai.
After celebrating with fans at the airport, Gukesh headed home for a private celebration with family. His father, ENT surgeon Dr. Rajinikanth, was by his side throughout the competition, while his mother, microbiologist Padmavathi, joined him for the finals in Singapore.
On Tuesday, a grand reception is planned at Kalaivanar Arangam, where Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin is expected to present him with a Rs five crore cheque in recognition of his achievement. Stalin commented on social platform ‘X’: “To honour the monumental achievement of Gukesh, the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, I am delighted to announce a cash prize of 5 crore!”
This victory caps a remarkable year for Gukesh, which includes a win at the Candidates Tournament in Toronto and leading India to its first-ever gold at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. His world championship win also earned him a prize of $1.3 million (approximately Rs 11.03 crore).
