Empowering Change: Joyful Leap to 26 Weeks Paid Maternity Leave Announced by Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya!
The Indian government has mandated the provision of creche facilities at workplaces with 50 or more employees, according to a statement made by the Centre today. The announcement was made by Labour and Employment Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya during a session of the Lok Sabha. This initiative aims to facilitate a better balance between employees’ work and family commitments.
To further support this goal, several legislative amendments have been introduced, most notably the revision of the Maternity Benefit Act of 1961. This amendment has increased the duration of paid maternity leave for female employees to 26 weeks.
Dr. Mandaviya also highlighted additional measures supporting working mothers. Women employed in the government sector who legally adopt a child under three months old are entitled to three months of paid leave. Moreover, commissioning mothers are provided with 12 weeks of paid leave, and in unfortunate cases of miscarriage, a leave period of six weeks is granted.
These reforms underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening workplace policies that support family and work-life balance for employees. The introduction of these facilities and benefits aims to foster a more inclusive work environment for women while addressing their diverse personal responsibilities.
