U2 Drummer Larry Mullen Jr Courageously Shares His Emotional Battle with Dyscalculia
Larry Mullen Jr., the drummer for the iconic band U2 for nearly five decades, recently opened up about his struggle with dyscalculia, a learning disability sometimes referred to as “math dyslexia.” Known for keeping time with one of the world’s most famous rock bands, Mullen Jr. revealed in an interview with Times Radio that he discovered his condition only recently, despite having always sensed something was amiss with his numerical abilities. Dyscalculia makes it difficult to comprehend arithmetic concepts like algebra and comparing quantities, which can also affect skills such as reading music.
The musician candidly shared how dyscalculia has impacted his performances, explaining the “pained” expression U2 fans often notice when he’s on stage. This challenge, he said, comes from the difficulty of counting bars in music, likening it to climbing Everest. Despite the hurdles, he has found ways to manage, relying on strategies to overcome the barriers posed by his learning disability.
Dyscalculia affects between 3% and 7% of children, adolescents, and adults, according to a 2019 study. With early childhood diagnosis, there are treatment options available; however, Mullen Jr. navigated this challenge on his own. Bringing awareness to the condition, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, whose two sons also have dyscalculia, serves as an ambassador for the UK’s Dyscalculia Network.
In the same interview, Mullen Jr. hinted at exciting prospects for U2, expressing enthusiasm about returning in some capacity after a hiatus following surgery. Fans can anticipate a potential 2026 tour and new music, which bandmate The Edge playfully described as “some crazy kind of sci-fi Irish folk music” involving renowned producer Brian Eno. The band also just celebrated the 20th anniversary of their album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” with a special reissue titled “How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb.”
