Nagaland Lottery Sambad: The State’s Legal Lottery System
In India, lottery games are largely prohibited, but exceptions exist for 13 states where they have been permitted since 1967. Among these is Nagaland, alongside states such as Assam, Mizoram, Kerala, Meghalaya, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal, and Sikkim.
Nagaland State Lotteries were established in 1972 under the Finance Department to provide a consistent revenue stream for the state’s government. The lotteries are drawn three times daily—morning, day, and evening—throughout the week. Each lottery event flaunts a distinct name and prize amount daily, with the top prize reaching up to Rs 1 crore. Notably, some of the daily lotteries are named Dear Morning, Dear Day, and Dear Evening, with tickets priced at Rs 6 each.
Overseeing the operations, the Director of Nagaland State Lotteries ensures the draws are conducted efficiently at P. R. Hill Junction, Kohima. Winners are required to produce a lottery claim form and their original, undamaged ticket. Additionally, a government-approved photo ID and passport-sized photos must accompany the claim. Damaged or tampered tickets will not be accepted.
For prizes up to ₹10,000, authorized distributors can make payments on behalf of the state. Larger claims beyond this amount must be filed within 30 days to the Director, Government of Nagaland, or respective Nodal Office, with all documentation submitted for claims processed within 60 days.
