Breaking: Bangladesh’s Interim Govt Acknowledges Shocking 88 Attacks on Vulnerable Religious Minorities

On December 11, the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, officially acknowledged the issue of communal violence against religious minorities, following several claims by India of such persecutions in the wake of political unrest in the country. This admission comes a day after Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Bangladesh, where concerns about the violence were reportedly raised.

Shafiqul Alam, Yunus’s press secretary, confirmed that 88 cases of communal violence, predominantly targeting Hindus, were registered between August 5 and October 22 this year. In connection with these incidents, 70 individuals have been arrested. Alam noted that the number of cases and arrests might increase as new instances of violence are reported in regions like northeastern Sunamganj and central Gazipur.

Alam also suggested that some of these attacks might have been aimed at former members of the previous ruling Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League or resulted from personal disputes. However, he emphasized that police are actively addressing all reported violence. Details of incidents occurring after October 22 are expected to be released soon.

This acknowledgment marks a notable shift from Alam’s earlier stance on December 7, when he condemned the Indian media for allegedly orchestrating a misinformation campaign depicting Bangladesh as a country where minorities face persecution. He had criticized international media portrayals, specifically from influential countries, and urged Bangladeshi media to conduct independent investigations into the purported atrocities.

The development highlights ongoing tensions between India and Bangladesh, particularly regarding the treatment of religious minorities, and reflects the increasing pressure on Bangladesh to address these concerns seriously. The official recognition of these incidents indicates a potential move towards greater transparency and accountability in dealing with communal violence in the region.
