In a significant political shift ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, AAP’s Seelampur MLA Abdul Rehman has resigned from his position and joined the Congress. Rehman is the first current AAP legislator to leave after being replaced by Zubair, the son of ex-Congress MLA Chaudhry Mateen Ahmad, for the Muslim-majority Seelampur constituency. This decision follows Rehman’s initial resignation from leading AAP’s minority wing after Zubair’s induction into the party in October.
In the 2020 Delhi elections, Rehman had achieved a landslide victory by securing over 72,000 votes against his BJP rival. However, in recent developments, he is among 16 sitting AAP MLAs being replaced as the party reshuffles candidates for 31 of the 70 Assembly seats. According to party insiders, AAP plans to repurpose the outgoing candidates for roles in its growing national organizational structure. These leaders may be instrumental in expanding AAP’s presence beyond Delhi, especially in states where the party is looking to establish a stronger foothold.
Two prominent figures, Matiala MLA Gulab Singh and Timarpur MLA Dilip Pandey, have already been replaced but continue to play significant roles in the party’s strategic planning. Singh, previously involved in AAP’s campaign efforts in Gujarat, and Pandey, engaged with both city and national organizational duties, exemplify AAP’s strategy to utilize loyal leaders for broader national outreach. The party aims to leverage their dedication and experience to strengthen its national presence, assuring that committed leaders will be entrusted with key roles in furthering AAP’s ambitions across India.
