Furious Assam Citizens Rally for Justice: Compelling Plea Against Md Yunus to Nobel Panel
A group of over 100 residents from Assam’s Cachar district, including three lawyers, have submitted a memorandum to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, urging it to denounce alleged violence against minorities in Bangladesh under the interim government of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The letter, signed by 110 individuals and presented to the Cachar District Commissioner on December 9, claims that Yunus’ association with this interim government has led to severe violence and persecution against Hindus and other minority groups.
The signatories argue that these incidents are part of a broader, deliberate campaign of persecution rather than isolated events. They criticize Yunus, previously hailed as a progressive figure, for failing to protect minority rights. Highlighting claims by former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the memorandum mentions accusations against Yunus of being a “mastermind” behind these violent episodes.
The letter warns the Nobel Committee that associating the Peace Prize with individuals linked to such violence could damage the award’s credibility. Although the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Yunus cannot be withdrawn, the signatories strongly urge the committee to issue a statement condemning the violence, to uphold the principles of peace, justice, and human dignity embodying the Nobel Peace Prize.
