Unveiling Meghalaya’s Land Bank Initiative: A Thrilling Leap Towards Tourism Growth and Job Creation
The government of Meghalaya has launched an innovative “Land Bank” initiative aimed at enhancing the state’s tourism infrastructure and addressing the rising demand for accommodations in popular tourist areas. This forward-looking project is designed to promote inclusive and sustainable tourism, while also creating substantial employment opportunities for locals.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has announced a call for Expressions of Interest (EoI) to encourage landowners and community groups to collaborate in establishing tourism accommodation facilities. Proposals for these partnerships must be submitted by mid-January 2025.
Lyngdoh highlighted the transformative potential of the land bank in expanding lodging options, particularly in areas like Dawki, where tourist numbers have outgrown the existing infrastructure. In the Garo Hills, the government is emphasizing adventure and wildlife tourism to bring attention to less developed regions of the state. The initiative is projected to create up to 100,000 new jobs within the next two to three years.
To achieve these goals, the government is proposing joint ventures with individuals and communities willing to contribute land for tourism-related development. Dawki, celebrated for its clear waters, remains a focal point due to an increase in visitors despite its limited infrastructure.
Minister Lyngdoh underscored the need for collaboration, stating, “We are reaching out to landowners and community members to partner with us by offering their land for tourism development. The EoI process is in motion, with mid-January as the submission deadline.”
Overall, the “Land Bank” initiative represents a strategic move to elevate Meghalaya’s stature as a premier tourist destination, ensuring equitable growth and creating new opportunities for its residents. This project aims to position Meghalaya on the global tourism map while supporting sustainable development and enhancing the local economy.
