Hopeful Breakthrough: Dhaka Envisions Stronger, Amicable Ties with Delhi, Says Bangladesh Foreign Adviser
Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md Touhid Hossain, expressed optimism on Sunday for a resolution to the persisting trade recession with India, which has lasted for the past two to three months, as reported by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), a government news agency. Hossain made these remarks during a seminar in Dhaka, indicating that he expects these issues to be resolved amicably soon.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Monday for the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between the two nations. This meeting, occurring at the foreign secretary level, is a routine mechanism for discussing bilateral trade and other mutual concerns and should not be considered unusual, Hossain noted.
Emphasizing the necessity of acknowledging existing problems to solve them, Hossain advocated for open dialogue between Bangladesh and India. He pointed out a qualitative improvement in their relationship following Bangladesh’s political changeover on August 5. Furthermore, he highlighted the crucial role of regional cooperation in enhancing trade, economic growth, and poverty alleviation across South Asia. Overcoming bilateral differences, according to Hossain, would benefit the region collectively.
Meanwhile, during a media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will visit Bangladesh on December 9. His agenda includes meetings with his Bangladeshi counterpart and several others.
The Foreign Office Consultations led by the Foreign Secretaries serve as a regular platform for engagement between Bangladesh and India. As reiterated by the MEA spokesperson, there is an anticipation and positive outlook towards the upcoming talks.
These diplomatic engagements underscore the continuous efforts of both nations to foster bilateral relations and address outstanding issues, reinforcing their commitment to regional stability and collaboration in South Asia.
