Discover Mizoram’s Green Legacy: Exciting Book Launch by CM Unveils Secrets of Tree & Carbon Storage at Aizawl Assam Rifles Campus
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma unveiled a new book titled “Tree Inventory and Carbon Storage of Assam Rifle Campus, Aizawl, Mizoram” on December 7. The book, prepared by the Center for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ), highlights the ecological value of the Assam Rifles campus in Aizawl. The chief minister used the occasion to stress the importance of sustainable development, urging citizens to prioritize eco-friendly practices.
A significant initiative mentioned at the event was the ongoing relocation of the Assam Rifles from Aizawl. A joint survey of the area is underway, and plans are in place to ensure strict protection of the land once vacated. The research behind the book was conducted by PC Zothanpuii and Michael Lalramdingliana, both affiliated with the Department of Forestry at Mizoram University. The book was edited by Dr. Vanramliana.
The study examines 480 plant species over 16.9 hectares of the Assam Rifles’ property, documenting 80 species spread across 31 families and 59 genera of trees. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the study identifies four critically endangered, one endangered, and five vulnerable species within the location. Additionally, the book highlights that 71 of the plants are medicinal and edible herbs, emphasizing their ecological and potential economic value. Remarkably, the site has been found to sequester 5766.73 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), underscoring its role as a vital carbon sink.
The Assam Rifles compound, often dubbed the “Lungs of Aizawl City,” has been under conservation efforts by the Bethlehem Branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) since 2008. The book launch and accompanying research underscore the area’s ecological significance and the necessity of its preservation, offering a model for sustainable development in urban settings.
