Pakistan’s Pride Shattered: Champions Trophy Adopts Hybrid Model; India’s Battles Set in Iconic City!
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, originally scheduled for announcement on December 5, has faced another delay, with a rescheduled meeting set for December 7. A significant development has emerged with Pakistan embracing a hybrid model, allowing India’s matches to be hosted elsewhere. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has agreed to conduct five out of 15 matches, including all Indian fixtures and possibly the final, in the UAE, provided India reaches the final. If not, Lahore remains a backup venue for the championship match. This model ensures India plays its group and knockout games in Dubai.
The hybrid model will extend to ICC tournaments until 2027, with India set to host the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2024 and co-host the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka, all without compelling Pakistan to travel to India by 2026. While the PCB requested a tri-series involving India at a neutral location, this proposition was rejected by both ICC and BCCI.
The ICC has urged the PCB to comply with the hybrid model, providing only this as an option. With the PCB’s acceptance, the stalemate seems to be moving towards resolution. A comprehensive announcement, potentially detailing the complete tournament schedule, is anticipated post the formal meeting on December 7. This arrangement, hailed as beneficial for all stakeholders, signifies a diplomatic success amid previous tensions between India and Pakistan and might set a precedent for future ICC events.
