Revolutionary $50 Million Boost for Water Harvesting in Meghalaya: A Transformative Alliance by Centre and ADB
The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a $50 million loan agreement to bolster water security and enhance climate resilience in Meghalaya. The initiative involves constructing water-harvesting systems aimed at improving water accessibility and reducing community vulnerability to climate change. Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, and Mio Oka, ADB’s India Resident Mission Country Director, were the signatories to this agreement, which aligns with the Meghalaya State Water Policy (MSWP) 2019.
This project will focus on sustainable development, management, and participatory utilization of water resources in the state. ADB will provide support in implementing the MSWP and incorporating climate adaptation strategies into water security plans. Designed to address monsoon challenges, the project will establish 532 small water storage facilities with climate-resilient designs across 12 districts, enhancing water availability during dry periods. Additionally, 3,000 hectares will be developed for reliable irrigation, and 50 weather stations will be installed for climate monitoring, particularly benefiting Garo, Jaintia, and Khasi regions.
Moreover, the project includes piloting renewable energy micro-hydropower in three water-harvesting systems. It will also enhance the capacity of Meghalaya’s Watershed and Wasteland Development Agency and the Soil and Water Conservation Department in water management. Farmers, especially women, will receive training to boost productivity in irrigated agriculture, including horticulture and fishery techniques.
Established in 1966, ADB is committed to fostering a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia-Pacific region and has 69 members, with 49 from the region. This collaboration signifies a step forward in sustainable water management and economic development in Meghalaya.
