Remarkable Breakthrough: India and Kuwait Forge Landmark MoU to Establish Joint Commission for Cooperation
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al Yahya have formalized a strategic partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) at the ministerial level. This significant development took place during their meeting in New Delhi yesterday. The MoU is designed to foster collaboration through the formation of new Joint Working Groups targeting various sectors, such as trade, investment, education, technology, agriculture, security, and culture. These groups aim to enhance and monitor bilateral relations between India and Kuwait, promising a more robust partnership.
In their discussions, the ministers reflected on the multifaceted nature of India-Kuwait relations, exploring avenues to broaden their ties further. They also shared insights on recent developments in West Asia and evaluated the scope of India’s collaboration with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister’s visit included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the PM’s official residence. During this meeting, Prime Minister Modi conveyed optimism that Kuwait’s presidency of the GCC would help fortify India’s cooperation with the Council. They deliberated on strategies to bolster collaboration across fields such as trade, investment, energy, and technology, while emphasizing cultural ties and the well-being of the Indian diaspora in Kuwait. Prime Minister Modi extended his gratitude to Kuwait for its considerate treatment of the Indian community, which numbers over a million.
Both leaders exchanged perspectives on the situation in West Asia, unanimously supporting efforts for restoring peace, security, and stability in the region. This diplomatic engagement underscores a mutual commitment to nurturing a deep-seated and multifaceted relationship, poised for growth in the coming years. The establishment of the JCC marks a pivotal step towards realizing this vision, laying a structured foundation for cooperation across diverse fronts.
