India Stands Firm: Emotionally Backing UNGA Resolution on Palestine
India, in a significant diplomatic stance, voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for Israel’s withdrawal from Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. This move underscores India’s commitment to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in West Asia. The resolution, proposed by Senegal and adopted overwhelmingly on December 3, demanded an end to Israel’s occupation and affirmed the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and establishing an independent state.
The resolution was supported by 157 member states, with only eight, including Israel and the United States, opposing it. Seven countries abstained. It reinforced the UN’s persistent support for a two-state solution, envisioning Israel and a sovereign Palestine coexisting peacefully within recognized pre-1967 borders. Additionally, it urged Israel to comply with international law, halt settlement activities, withdraw settlers, and end unlawful actions, reflecting the advisory opinion of the International Court.
Notably, the resolution also rejected any demographic or territorial changes in the Gaza Strip, affirming it as an integral part of Palestinian territory. An immediate cessation of violence, military attacks, and other provocations was also stressed. Furthermore, India backed another UNGA resolution demanding Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights to the 1967 borders, underlining its adherence to relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
This support highlights India’s diplomatic alignment with the international community on the Palestinian issue, advocating for peace and security in the region, and reflecting a broader consensus for resolving long-standing conflicts in line with international law.
