Join Forces to Eradicate TB: Governor’s Passionate Call to Political Leaders and Civil Societies in Nagaland
Nagaland Governor La Ganesan called for a concerted effort to make Nagaland and India tuberculosis-free, urging political leaders, government officials, and civil society to become ‘Nikshay Mitras’ and support TB patients. At the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan event in Kohima, he encouraged individuals to adopt TB patients and spread awareness, emphasizing that joint efforts could enhance the government’s TB response strategy.
According to recent government data, India had an estimated 27 lakh TB cases in 2023, with 25.1 lakh diagnosed and treated. Currently, 410 Nikshay Mitras in Nagaland are assisting 1,000 TB patients, which Governor Ganesan believes is crucial for achieving a TB-free region and country. He highlighted the role of nutrition and collective societal involvement in combating TB.
Tourism and Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along commended the progress of the Nikshay Mitra Campaign and noted the governor’s personal commitment, supporting 36 patients. Anoop Khinchi, Commissioner and Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, emphasized the importance of community participation in raising awareness and reducing stigma.
Nagaland reported 3,018 TB cases by September, and Khinchi asserted that cross-sector collaboration and strong political backing are essential for meeting targets. Mission Director of Nagaland Health Mission, Dr. Akuo Sorhie, reported advancements in case detection and treatment, with Dimapur as a primary hotspot. She stressed the significance of screening and nutritional support through the Nikshay Poshan Yojana.
A new TB Mukt Panchayat Initiative has enabled 78 villages in Nagaland to become TB-free in 2023. Dr. Sorhie announced a 100-day intensified TB elimination campaign starting on December 7 to push towards the 2025 national goal. She urged political leaders to demonstrate strong leadership in combating TB, underscoring the necessity of political will to tackle the disease’s persistent threat.
