Exciting New 6-Lane Highway to Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport Unveiled – A Transformational Journey for Northeast
In a significant development, the Assam Government announced plans to upgrade the existing four-lane road leading to the new terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati to a six-lane highway. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting attended virtually by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from New Delhi. An additional ₹116 crore from the state budget has been allocated for the road expansion, raising the project’s total estimated cost to ₹474 crore.
During the cabinet meeting, it was also decided to establish a separate literary award named after renowned litterateur Homen Borgohain. This award will specifically benefit individuals who are government pensioners, providing a one-time assistance of ₹50,000. Furthermore, a monthly literary pension will be extended to eligible individuals, excluding those currently receiving government pensions, with exceptions for employees of corporations and undertakings.
Chief Minister Sarma shared that Assam is poised for a major development boost, with projects worth ₹1 lakh crore likely to be unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the upcoming Advantage Assam Summit in February. Among the planned projects are the expansion of the Bongaigaon Refinery by an additional 5 million MT and the Namrup Fertilizer Plant at a cost of ₹10,000 crore. Other notable initiatives include the Guwahati Ring Road project, Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, and the Numaligarh-Gohpur road tunnel.
Further infrastructure efforts involve constructing a new Expressway from Guwahati to Barapani and Panchgram, estimated at ₹25,000 crore, and a new bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Morigaon and Darrang. Additionally, two satellite townships in Jagiroad and Palasbari and a railway project linking Guwahati to Gelephu in Bhutan are under consideration. The Chief Minister highlighted fruitful discussions with the Prime Minister and Central Ministers, emphasizing positive outcomes for Assam’s future development.
