Chief Information Commissioner Meets Governor to Discuss RTI Enhancements
Gangtok, Dec 5, 2024: Chief Information Commissioner of India, Heeralal Samariya, paid a visit to Governor Om Prakash Mathur at the Raj Bhavan, to discuss advancements in the implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The meeting underscored the ongoing efforts to enhance transparency and accountability within the system. Samariya highlighted the Supreme Court of India’s directive for State Information Commissions (SICs) to adopt a hybrid mode of hearings. This approach aims to make complaint and appeal hearings more efficient and accessible through electronic filing.
The Governor commended the efforts of the information commissioners and underscored the importance of the RTI Act in empowering the public. He emphasized the need for continued diligence in ensuring citizens receive accurate and timely information. This, he noted, is crucial for the further strengthening of the system’s transparency and accountability mechanisms.
The Chief Information Commissioner assured that RTI applications are typically resolved within the mandated timeframe, reflecting progress in administrative efficiency. Samariya was joined by a delegation of state-level commissioners, including Tripurari Sharan of Bihar, R Mahaboob Basha of Andhra Pradesh, and others representing various states. Their presence highlighted a collective commitment to improving information dissemination processes nationwide.
The Governor expressed appreciation for the commissioners’ dedication and urged them to sustain their efforts, emphasizing their crucial role in fostering an informed and engaged citizenry. The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to continue refining the RTI process, ensuring it remains a vital tool for democracy and good governance.
