Bihar Call Centre Owner Exposed in Shocking 3-Year Scam: Arrested for Defrauding with False Govt Benefits Promises | Patna News
Over the past three years, numerous individuals have fallen victim to a fraud scheme operated from a call centre in Gaya town, Bihar, losing between Rs 80,000 and Rs 3 lakh each. The fraudulent operation promised victims assistance in accessing government benefits and securing loans from banks and financial institutions. The scam was uncovered on Sunday following 37 complaints received over the past year by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) against 26 phone numbers tied to the scheme.
Police tracked these numbers back to the call centre in Gaya and arrested 36 individuals, including the owner and employees associated with the operation. According to Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police Ashish Bharti, the fraudulent employees charged a service fee from victims, instructing them to send money via a QR code. The promised services were never rendered, leading to the complaints.
City SP Prerna Kumar, speaking on the matter, revealed that Nishant Kumar, the call centre’s owner and one of the arrested, failed to provide any relevant company documentation or clarify the nature of his business. The operation, which exploited technology for deceit, resulted in the arrest of individuals under provisions of the IT Act.
Despite the crackdown, several families of those arrested claim the accused were merely employees and allege that the true mastermind is the call centre owner. The police continue to investigate the total amount defrauded, but reports indicate each victim lost considerable sums between Rs 80,000 and Rs 3 lakh.
The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance against such scams and underscores the challenge posed by fraudulent activities masked as legitimate business operations. Authorities stress the importance of verifying the legitimacy of calls promising financial or governmental benefits.
