Urgent: Mounting Concerns at Bangladesh-Myanmar Border Ignite Crucial Discussions at 59th DGP, IGP Conference
New Delhi, Dec. 2: The 59th All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police wrapped up in Bhubaneswar, with significant discussions on security threats along the borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. Key figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, emphasized the need to address not only traditional security issues but also urban policing, cybercrimes, and counterfeit narratives.
A Home Ministry official noted the comprehensive nature of the discussions, which covered national security challenges such as counter-terrorism, left-wing extremism, economic threats, immigration, coastal security, and drug trafficking. The hybrid conference was attended by police leaders from all States and Union Territories, as well as over 750 officers virtually.
Reflecting on the conference, Prime Minister Modi expressed satisfaction with the strategies devised and stressed the importance of tackling digital frauds and the implications of AI technologies, particularly the risks associated with deepfakes. He urged police leaders to leverage India’s strengths in AI and “Aspirational India” to turn challenges into opportunities.
Modi applauded advances in urban policing and proposed implementing successful strategies across 100 cities. He emphasized the use of technology to alleviate the constabulary’s workload and suggested making police stations central to resource allocation. Highlighting the effectiveness of hackathons, he proposed the idea of a National Police Hackathon.
Additionally, Modi called for enhanced focus on port security and urged for strategic planning in this area. In tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s upcoming 150th birth anniversary, the Prime Minister rallied the security sector to improve policing standards and professional capabilities, urging a commitment to initiatives that would elevate the police image and performance.
