Urgent Appeal: Assam CM Sarma Promises Beef Ban Upon Congress’s Request – A Bold Stand in Guwahati
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that he would consider banning beef in the state if the Congress party submits a formal written request advocating for such a ban. This announcement was made during a media interaction, where Sarma addressed allegations from senior Congress leaders, including Rakibul Hussain. Hussain had accused the BJP of distributing beef to garner votes in the Muslim-majority Samaguri constituency during a recent by-election. Hussain, a prominent figure in the former Congress government, has represented the Samaguri seat since 2001, but his son, Tanzil, lost the recent bypoll that was held after Hussain moved to the Lok Sabha by defeating AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal in Dhubri.
Sarma challenged Hussain by suggesting that if Congress officially requests a beef ban, he will advocate for Congress in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. Furthermore, Sarma questioned whether the Congress had historically relied on beef distribution to win elections in Samaguri, implying that the Congress’s claims might be a reflection of their own practices.
This debate around beef underscores the political dynamics in Assam, where communal and cultural sensitivities often intersect with electoral strategies. The CM’s comments represent yet another episode in the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and Congress in the state.
