Black Friday, originally an American retail phenomenon, is rapidly gaining popularity in India, turning into one of the most eagerly awaited sales events. Indian e-commerce giants like Amazon, Flipkart, and Snapdeal have embraced Black Friday, offering significant discounts across categories such as electronics, fashion, and beauty. The sales event is especially crucial for Indian retailers; post-Diwali, Black Friday offers a chance to clear out excess inventory at substantial discounts, according to business strategist Harish Bijoor.

The market for Black Friday in India is expanding swiftly, with sales growth projections between 10% and 200% this year and a compound annual growth rate of 37.4% expected by 2032. The rise in popularity can be attributed to the localization of the event, increased digital adoption, and the appeal to value-conscious consumers. Innovations in shopping experiences and strategic marketing have enhanced its allure on the Indian retail calendar.

This year, Black Friday sales have broadened beyond electronics to include home appliances, groceries, and skincare, with a notable demand for premium skincare products. High-profile sales events like Amazon’s ‘Black Friday Week’ and Flipkart’s ‘Big Savings Days’ have seen significant traction, offering bundled deals and easy financing options.

Experts suggest that Black Friday can be further ‘Indianized’ by integrating local themes and leveraging influencers to connect with Indian audiences. According to Maddie Amrutkar, connecting cultural narratives with strategic storytelling can transform Black Friday into an experiential shopping event.

Furthermore, there is notable participation from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, highlighting a shift towards more inclusive national engagement. Analysts predict continued growth for Black Friday in India, making it an essential part of the retail strategy for both online and brick-and-mortar stores. As consumer awareness and digital shopping increase, Black Friday is set to be a cornerstone of the Indian shopping season.
