Revolutionary Siang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal: Empowering Communities and Safeguarding Against Floods
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has unveiled ambitious plans for the Siang Multipurpose Project, a transformative initiative poised to address key regional challenges beyond traditional hydroelectric dam functionalities. This comprehensive development plan targets three core objectives: effective flood management, water flow regulation, and substantial power generation.
The state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has been entrusted to develop detailed project and feasibility reports, reflecting a strategic and methodical approach to infrastructure development in the region. Emphasizing the project’s vast potential, CM Khandu announced a projected power generation capacity exceeding 13,500 megawatts, which positions the project as a significant economic boon for Arunachal Pradesh. The state has secured a notable 26% equity share in the project, accompanied by an allocation of 12% free power.
NHPC’s estimates suggest a generation potential of 10-12 gigawatts of hydropower, setting the stage for the Siang project to become India’s largest hydroelectric venture.
