Exciting Milestone: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Unveils State-of-the-Art SDJM Court Complex in Lakhipur!
Silchar: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking at the inauguration of the new Lakhipur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Court Complex, underscored the importance of delivering justice efficiently to uphold democracy. Joined by Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Vijay Bishnoi and Justices Suman Shyam and Kalyan Rai Surana, Dr. Sarma emphasized his government’s commitment to making judicial services more accessible and efficient. The new complex, costing Rs. 3.78 crore, is part of a broader initiative to improve judicial infrastructure, with similar projects completed in Barpeta, Sivasagar, and Bokakhat and planned for Diphu, Dhubri, Goalpara, and Tinsukia.
Dr. Sarma highlighted the public’s growing frustration with delayed court proceedings, particularly in serious crimes such as rape. He stressed that guilty individuals must not escape punishment while protecting the innocent from wrongful prosecution remains crucial. Efforts to modernize judicial processes include digitization, with measures like e-filing and virtual hearings leading towards paperless courts.
He also praised the establishment of specialized POCSO courts in 17 districts and upcoming facilities in Nagaon to speed up cases involving crimes against children. Acknowledging the need to update outdated laws, Dr. Sarma lauded the adoption of the Indian Justice Code and new initiatives to alleviate court congestion by withdrawing over 81,000 minor cases.
Promoting legal aid, the government introduced measures such as the Borosa mobile app and e-Seva centers to support women in distress. Additionally, the National Forensic Science University in Guwahati is expected to enhance scientific investigations and legal education. The Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy against crimes targeting women and children, strengthening the fight for justice in Assam.
