Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Bold Response to Allegations: Promises Beef Ban If Congress Requests
In a bold announcement on November 30, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared his willingness to impose a statewide ban on beef, should Congress leader Bhupen Kumar Borah submit a formal written request. This statement comes amid rising political tensions and allegations that Assam’s BJP has strategically used controversial tactics, including hosting a “beef party,” to garner minority votes, particularly in the context of the recent Samaguri election.
The Samaguri constituency, long a Congress stronghold, recently shifted to BJP, with BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarma securing a decisive victory over Congress’s Tanzil Hussain by an impressive 26,200-vote margin. Sarma described Congress’s defeat, after holding the seat for 25 years, as a significant blow to the party rather than a mere triumph for the BJP.
Addressing accusations from Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, who claimed BJP’s use of beef swayed voters, Sarma highlighted Hussain’s acknowledgment of beef consumption as inappropriate. He challenged whether Congress, during Hussain’s tenure as a five-time MLA, had similarly leveraged beef politically in the Samaguri region. Sarma argued that if Hussain sincerely believes beef is objectionable, Congress should openly advocate for a complete ban. He urged Bhupen Borah, the state Congress president, to confirm this stance officially to pave the way for a ban, removing beef as a potential electoral issue.
This development adds a fresh dimension to Assam’s political narrative, where electoral strategy, cultural sensitivities, and religious dynamics remain intertwined. Sarma’s proposal seeks to resolve the contentious debate while preventing any party from exploiting beef-related issues to influence voters.
