Anil Agarwal’s Bold Billion-Dollar Vision: Vedanta’s Rs 16,500 Crore Investment Transforms Emerging Muslim Nation!
In a significant strategic shift, Vedanta Limited’s subsidiary, Vedanta Copper International, has forged a USD 2 billion agreement with Saudi Arabia to advance copper projects in the region. This investment will see the establishment of a copper smelter and refinery and a copper rod production facility in Saudi Arabia, marking a substantial move away from Vedanta’s previous focus in India.
The copper smelter and refinery will boast an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes, while the copper rod facility is set for a substantial output of 300,000 tonnes per year. This development aims to significantly reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependency on copper imports, currently at 365,000 tonnes annually, by bolstering local production capabilities. The projects are expected to meet domestic demand and support various industrial applications, including cable manufacturing.
This venture marks an important reorientation in Vedanta’s global strategy. Known for the Sterlite Copper plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, Vedanta was previously instrumental in fulfilling nearly half of India’s copper requirements. However, environmental and legal challenges led to the plant’s shutdown, transforming India from a copper exporter to a net importer. India’s copper sector faced a drastic transformation between fiscal 2018 and 2023, with export figures dropping from 180,000 tonnes to a mere 61,000 tonnes and imports skyrocketing to 283,000 tonnes in fiscal 2019, holding steady at 275,000 tonnes by 2023. This downturn affected the Indian copper industry and the associated job market.
To ensure a reliable supply chain for the new Saudi facilities, Vedanta has also reinforced its control over Konkola Copper Mines in Zambia. This move underlines Vedanta’s commitment to maintaining a robust raw material supply stream for its expanding international ventures, signaling a renewed focus on boosting its presence in the Middle East.
