Shocking Mix-Up: Dibrugarh Makeup Artist Mistaken for Bengaluru Murder Victim
Guwahati: Maya Gogoi, a makeup artist from Dibrugarh, Assam, has been mistakenly identified as the victim of a tragic incident in Bengaluru. Originally from Guwahati, a 19-year-old vlogger, also named Maya Gogoi, was found murdered in a service apartment in Bengaluru, leading to a wave of condolence messages on social media targeting the wrong individual.
The misunderstanding unfolded when social media users began posting "RIP" messages on the Instagram profile of the Dibrugarh-based makeup artist. Despite her attempts to clarify with a story highlight titled “I am not that girl,” the messages continued. Distressed, she posted a video saying, "I’m alive… stop sending me these stupid comments,” and further highlighted her plight in local media.
Clarifying further, Maya stated, “I live in Banipur, Dibrugarh, and I have never been to Bengaluru. People are confusing me with the other Maya Gogoi who was murdered. It’s been extremely distressing.”
The victim in the case, a vlogger, was reported to have checked into the apartment with her boyfriend, Aarav Hanoy, on November 24. Her decomposed body was discovered on Tuesday in a service apartment in Bengaluru’s Indira Nagar, showing fatal injuries to her chest and head, with the chest wound being the cause of death. Aarav Hanoy, a student counsellor from Kannur, Kerala, was arrested by Karnataka Police as the prime suspect after leaving the apartment alone on the morning of the murder.
Living with her sister in HSR Layout and employed at a private company in Jayanagar, the vlogger had informed her sister that she would be attending office parties over the weekend, not returning home. This tragic case highlights not only the gravity of the crime itself but also the disruption caused by mistaken identity in the digital age.
