Pakistan’s Triumphant Rise: How It Outpaces India to Rank Among the World’s Top 10 Most Powerful Militaries
Pakistan has emerged as the 9th largest military force globally, surpassing India in several areas despite its challenging economic conditions, according to the Fire Power Index. While the country historically faced setbacks against India in past conflicts, it has steadily built a robust military infrastructure with a specific focus on its eastern neighbor.
The Pakistani military comprises 654,000 personnel, supported significantly by Chinese assistance. Its air force inventory includes 1,434 aircraft, with 387 being fighter jets. In certain aspects, such as attack helicopters, Pakistan leads, possessing 57 compared to India’s 40. However, India outnumbers Pakistan in overall fighter aircraft and helicopters, boasting 606 fighter jets and 869 helicopters.
On the ground, the Pakistani army is equipped with 3,742 tanks and 50,523 armored vehicles, while its self-propelled artillery count of 752 surpasses India’s 140. The Pakistani military also maintains a considerable number of drawn artillery and mobile rocket launchers.
Pakistan’s naval strength is bolstered by 114 ships, including 8 submarines and 9 frigate warships. However, unlike India, which possesses 2 aircraft carriers and a larger fleet of 294 vessels, Pakistan lacks an aircraft carrier.
In terms of missile capabilities, Pakistan’s arsenal includes a variety of cruise and ballistic missiles, such as the Hatf and Shaheen series, as well as anti-tank guided missiles like the Baktar-Shikan. The country also deploys medium-range ballistic missiles and anti-ship weapons, enhancing its strategic capabilities.
Both India and Pakistan are nuclear states, with Pakistan holding 170 nuclear warheads, closely trailing India’s 172 as of January 2024, according to the SIPRI report.
