Alarming Discovery: Pathogenic Drug-Resistant Bacteria in Ukraine War Victims Sparks Urgent Concerns
Researchers from Lund University in Sweden identified a concerning discovery about antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Ukraine war-wounded individuals. A year after finding strains of bacteria with total antibiotic resistance, the team has published their recent findings in the Journal of Infection. The study reveals that Klebsiella pneumoniae, a bacterium known for its complete antibiotic resistance, is not only difficult to treat but also highly aggressive and dangerous.
The researchers examined samples from 141 individuals, including war-wounded adults and newborns with pneumonia, and found that 6% showed resistance to all tested antibiotics. The presence of this drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae from Ukraine is significant, contributing to one in five deaths globally due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The study highlights the bacterium’s ability to cause various infections, including urinary tract infections, pneumonia, wound infections, and sepsis.
Kristian Riesbeck, a professor at Lund University, emphasized that one-quarter of the bacteria were pandrug-resistant, making them extremely challenging to treat. Experimental findings showed that these resistant strains survived better in animal models and were more virulent, carrying genes that enhance their ability to cause disease.
Alarmingly, the bacteria retained their ability to cause infections despite their resistance, posing a continued threat of spreading if proper isolation and treatment measures are not implemented. The study’s findings serve as a warning about the potential future challenges in managing such infections, emphasizing the need for vigilant monitoring and global healthcare strategies to prevent the spread of these formidable pathogens.
