Shocking Truth: How Standing at Work Could Skyrocket Your Blood Pressure
A study from the University of Turku, Finland, has highlighted the impact of workplace posture on blood pressure, revealing that extended standing can negatively affect cardiovascular health. Published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the research indicates that while more sitting at work is linked to healthier blood pressure (BP) levels, prolonged standing can raise it by increasing the heart’s workload on blood vessels. Doctoral researcher Jooa Norha explains that consistent high BP throughout a 24-hour period, measured during the study, puts undue strain on the heart and blood vessels, potentially leading to cardiovascular disease over time.
The Finnish Retirement and Aging study (FIREA) monitored municipal employees near retirement, using thigh-worn accelerometers and portable BP monitors. The findings suggest workplace physical activity, specifically prolonged standing, can harm cardiovascular health by constricting blood vessels to enhance circulation in the lower limbs.
Norha advises alternating between sitting and standing to mitigate these effects, recommending breaks from standing with walking or sitting intervals. Importantly, sedentary work isn’t inherently harmful to BP, but recreational physical activity remains crucial for overall health for both office and construction workers.
