Epic Adventure Falls Flat: Moana 2 Movie Review – An Emotional Voyage Adrift
Moana 2 Movie Review: Navigating Familiar Waters
Disney’s beloved ocean adventurer is back in "Moana 2," but the sequel doesn’t quite chart new territory. Auli’i Cravalho reprises her role as Moana, the Polynesian heroine who originally captivated audiences in the 2016 film. This follow-up, though, feels predictable in an age dominated by sequels and spin-offs.
As Moana embarks on a new mission, she is joined by Matangi, a demi-goddess voiced by Awhimai Fraser, who sticks to the mantra "There is always another way." However, Disney seems reluctant to explore fresh narratives, echoing much of what fans loved about the first film.
Returning alongside Moana is Dwayne Johnson’s Maui, the charming demi-god, but new characters like Moni, essentially a mini-Maui, don’t leave a lasting impression. The standout among the newcomers is Loto, an inventive character played by Rose Matafeo, who tweaks Moana’s canoe to tackle challenges from the formidable Nalo. Despite Loto’s ingenuity, she’s largely relegated to sidekick status.
A major flaw is the film’s antagonist, Nalo, who remains largely unseen, portrayed only as an ominous voice or silhouette. Yet, during the credits, there’s a hint of more to come, teasing a potential “Moana 3.”
The original "Moana" was praised for offering young Disney fans a unique heroine who defied traditional tropes, but "Moana 2" struggles to find new depth. The plot centers around a quest to uncover the sunken island of Motufetu, an idea that feels less than inspired.
While Moana and her sister share some heartwarming moments, much of the film’s humor and music fall flat. Directors David G. Derrick Jr, Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller deliver a visually pleasing sequel, but it ultimately sails in familiar waters. Rated at 2 stars, “Moana 2” lacks the magic that made its predecessor a standout.
