Thrilling Triumph: Assam’s Uma Chetry Shines in Indian Squad for Exciting ODI Series Against Australia
New Delhi, Nov 28: In a notable team change, Uma Chetry has been called up to India’s squad for the upcoming three-match women’s ODI series against Australia, replacing Yastika Bhatia. Bhatia, a seasoned top-order batter, is sidelined due to a wrist injury sustained during the Women’s Big Bash League in Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the selection of Chetry, a promising wicketkeeper-batter from Assam, as her replacement.
Chetry, who has already represented India in four T20 matches, becomes the first player from Assam to join the senior national team. Despite her relative inexperience compared to Bhatia—who boasts a record of three Tests, 28 ODIs, and 19 T20s—Chetry has been a consistent presence with the team since July 2023 and was part of the victorious squad at the Asian Games.
The series against Australia is part of the ICC Women’s Championship, and the Indian team will face formidable opponents starting with the first two ODIs at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field on December 5 and 8. The tour concludes at Perth’s WACA Ground on December 11. Chetry’s inclusion is a significant milestone for Assam cricket and adds an exciting dimension to India’s lineup as they prepare for this high-stakes series.
