Shocking Arrest: Domestic Help Behind 50 Thefts Across 3 Cities Captured by Mumbai Police
A 38-year-old woman, identified as Vanita alias Asha Shailendra Gaikwad, was arrested by the Mumbai crime branch for her alleged involvement in nearly 50 theft cases across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. Gaikwad, known for changing names and residences frequently, primarily targeted upscale housing societies by convincing watchmen to inform her if house help was needed. Her modus operandi involved spending two days at her employer’s home: one to locate valuables and the next to flee with them. In her latest alleged crime, she absconded with jewellery and cash worth Rs 3.5 lakh from the Vashi home of 59-year-old Zakir Mahate just four days after being hired.
While Navi Mumbai police searched for her, the Mumbai crime branch received a tip-off about her hiding in Mahul Gaon, Chembur. Led by Inspector Atmaji Sawant, the police apprehended Gaikwad and transferred her to Navi Mumbai authorities for further investigation. Officials suspect her husband, who has a prior criminal record and has been externed from the city, assists in selling the stolen gold. Gaikwad’s systematic approach of taking on short-term domestic roles to scout and steal valuables underlines her career in deception, leaving a trail of victims across multiple neighborhoods.
