Trinamool Revolutionizes Party Structure, Stirs Anticipation on INDIA Bloc Role
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee attended the party’s national working committee meeting in Kolkata on November 25, 2024, to address organizational restructuring. The meeting led to the induction of new members into the national working committee and the establishment of disciplinary committees at national and state levels. The party nominated spokespersons, including notable figures like Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien, to strengthen communication efforts. However, TMC remained silent on its participation in the INDIA bloc and on addressing industrialist Gautam Adani’s recent legal issues in the U.S.
Post-meeting, Chandrima Bhattacharya articulated the party’s focus on issues such as price rise, unemployment, and fund allocation under central schemes like PM Awas Yojana and MGNREGA. The Adani controversy remained undiscussed. New committee appointees included prominent figures like Biman Banerjee, which marked a strategic reshuffle, while exclusion from the meeting hit senior leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy due to his recent comments against the West Bengal government.
The TMC also outlined plans for political activism, notably its women’s wing protesting for presidential assent to the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill, aimed at imposing harsher penalties for rape; a 15-member delegation will seek to meet President Droupadi Murmu on December 10. Abhishek Banerjee proposed pushing for this Bill’s approval, which received party backing. Furthermore, the TMC aims to educate its younger members about its history through district-level workshops. The meeting also witnessed the presence of Birbhum leader Anubrata Mondal, recently released on bail linked to a cattle smuggling scam.
