Outrage Erupts as NEHU Students Demand an Investigation into VC’s No Entry Ban
In a decisive move, the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has firmly resolved to prevent Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla from returning to the university, regardless of the findings of a Ministry of Education-initiated inquiry. Meeting with a two-member committee, comprising former UGC Chairman DP Singh and ex-Vice Chancellor of Assam University Dilip Chandra Nath, NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun conveyed that Professor Shukla is not welcome back, irrespective of the investigation’s outcome.
Sohtun expressed satisfaction with the committee’s responsiveness to their grievances, hoping for stringent recommendations based on the evidence and representations provided that highlight three years of alleged misconduct by Shukla. Detailed submissions, including memoranda of various grievances, have been presented to substantiate their claims. The union president indicated that the NEHUSU and NEHU’s Khasi Students’ Union unit would assess the possibility of relaxing ongoing protests and resuming classes; however, regular classes remain suspended, with sit-in demonstrations continuing daily outside the administrative building.
NEHUSU’s General Secretary, Toniho S Kharsati, reiterated the strength of their case against the VC, stressing their unified call for his removal. Similarly, NEHUTA President Lakhon Kma announced that the NEHUTA, NEHUSU, and NEHUNSA have declared the VC a persona non grata, a stance even supported by the Mawlai Town Dorbar, which has jurisdiction over the campus.
Kma criticized Shukla’s tenure, describing it as fraught with issues from recruitment to administrative decisions. He assured that the panel members, already familiar with such challenges, have been thoroughly briefed on these matters. Following an inspection of the university’s facilities—not including the VC’s vandalized quarters—the committee is left to form their assessment, but the stakeholders have made it clear: Professor Shukla’s return as VC is untenable.
