Barclays Capital analyst Jeffrey Bernstein suggests the industry faces a “pizza war,” echoing earlier “burger wars,” as brands wrestle for value-conscious consumers. Domino’s itself has not elaborated much on Berkshire’s new stake even after a stock resurgence triggered by the news, which has still seen only a 10% year-to-date increase compared to the S&P 500’s 25% rise. Despite this, Berkshire may have seized on Domino’s attracive valuation, consistent with its focus on value investment principles prioritizing cash flow and financial metrics.
In an intriguing development, Domino’s management reportedly did not confer directly with Buffett but likely addressed preliminary inquiries from Berkshire before the purchase announcement. This acquisition adds to Berkshire’s portfolio diversification, yet maintains its preference for recognizable consumer brands.
