Triumphant Celebration: NPP Leader Prestone Tynsong Leads Jubilant Gathering Honoring Mehtab Chandee’s Victorious Gambegre Win
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Prestone Tynsong steered a celebratory meeting at the party’s Lower Lachumiere office following Dr. Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma’s decisive victory in the Gambegre by-elections. The NPP’s official social media platform highlighted the triumph as a reaffirmation of the people’s faith in the party, emphasizing their commitment to prioritize the interests of Meghalaya’s citizens.
“This bypoll result of Gambegre reaffirms people’s trust in NPP. We will always keep on working, putting the people of Meghalaya up front,” the party declared.
Dr. Mehtab Chandee, wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, achieved a historic win by securing the Gambegre seat with a substantial lead of 4,594 votes. Her victory ended the Congress party’s long-standing stronghold in the constituency, a position they had maintained for over ten years.
This success represents a significant milestone for the NPP, which had previously faced challenges in Gambegre. During the 2023 Assembly elections, the NPP struggled, failing to even secure the runner-up position as Congress and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) dominated the constituency.
The seat was previously held by Congress heavyweight Saleng A. Sangma, who secured it for three consecutive terms since its formation in 2013, after earlier winning from the now-merged Dalamgiri constituency. Saleng vacated the seat after his victory in the Tura Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.
Dr. Mehtab Chandee’s win not only breaks Congress’s decade-long grip on Gambegre but also boosts the NPP’s standing in the political landscape of Meghalaya, signifying a potential shift in voter loyalty and heralding new opportunities for the party in future electoral contests.
