Heartfelt Justice: Tension Mounts as Last Rites Held for Jiribam Victims | Guwahati News
In Silchar, the last rites for nine victims of recent violence in Jiribam were conducted amid tight security at Ningsingkhul Biodiversity Park on Friday. Among the deceased were three women and three children, allegedly abducted from a relief camp by suspected Kuki militants on November 11. Their bodies were later discovered in the Barak River, spanning areas within Manipur and bordering Assam. The same assault claimed the lives of two men in the Borobekra subdivision. Another man was killed during a police shooting at a protest against the kidnapping and murder of the women and children.
Earlier that day, the deceased were transported to Jiribam following post-mortem examinations at SMCH. Local residents paid their respects with floral tributes and prayers. The bodies were released to Jiribam’s joint action committee (JAC), representing the Meitei community, by Assam authorities. A large crowd from the Meitei community gathered at the SMCH morgue, dressed in traditional attire, to conduct initial rituals. Each body, marked with a photograph of the deceased, was placed on a truck as part of a cortege of vehicles displaying black flags, heading back to Jiribam. There, the JAC entrusted the remains to the victims’ families for final ceremonies.
A spokesperson for the JAC appealed for justice from the respective governments, classifying the perpetrators as terrorists rather than village defense volunteers. The solemn procession and community participation underscore the tragic loss and demand for accountability in this conflict-stricken region.
