Guwahati, Nov 23: In a significant electoral outcome, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept all five by-poll seats in Assam, namely Bongaigaon, Dholai, Sidli, Behali, and Samaguri. This triumph set the stage for a vibrant celebration as party supporters took to the streets with music, fireworks, and victory chants, emphasizing BJP’s bolstered influence as they head towards the 2026 Assam Assembly polls.
Strategically fielding candidates, BJP secured victories in Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai, while its partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party, Liberal (UPPL) claimed Bongaigaon and Sidli, ensuring a sweeping 5-0 win. In Dholai, BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das won by 9,098 votes, while Diplu Ranjan Sarma triumphed in Samaguri. Diganta Ghatowar clinched a victory in Behali by 9,051 votes over Congress’ Jayanta Bora. UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma and AGP’s Diptimayee Choudhury secured Sidli and Bongaigaon with comfortable margins, respectively.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted this victory as a testament to Assam’s support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance vision. Meanwhile, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee acknowledged defeat but noted a rise in their vote share, indicating potential growth as they strategize for 2026. Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi remarked on the challenging conditions faced by Congress in the by-polls and suggested a stronger performance could have been possible with alliances.
These by-poll results are expected to reshape the political strategies of both BJP and Congress as they prepare for future elections, reinforcing BJP’s stronghold in Assam and prompting introspection within Congress.
