Breaking Free: Alezo Venuh Unravels the Emotional Disconnect Between Insurgency and Naga Politics | MorungExpress
The 17th anniversary of Naga Unification Day was observed at the GPRN/NSCN’s Council Headquarters in Khehoi, Niuland, where a call for Naga reconciliation resonated throughout the event. The commemoration saw participation from a wide array of dignitaries across the Naga social spectrum. Presided over by General (retired) MB Neokpao Konyak, the President of GPRN/NSCN, the occasion involved Ato Kilonser Alezo Venuh highlighting a shift in the narrative of the Naga political discourse since the signing of the Agreed Position with the Government of India. He asserted that demeaning terms like “insurgency” have been replaced with a focus on the “political and historical rights of the Nagas.”
Venuh emphasized the organization’s role in fostering Naga consciousness and unity among various political groups, alongside successful negotiations with the Indian government. He stressed the need for genuine Naga unity and reconciliation, a cause supported by the church and apex tribal bodies. Venuh also called for educational institutions promoting self-reliance among Naga youth within a fair political environment and pointed out the detrimental effects of factionalism, while acknowledging clear distinctions between genuine national endeavors and self-interested pursuits.
The Agreed Position between the GoI and GPRN/NSCN aims to respect Naga identity while fostering an inclusive and honorable coexistence. Venuh criticized the Framework Agreement of 2015, labeling it as mysterious and detrimental to the Naga cause, pointing out the failure of past agreements, including the Amsterdam Communiqué.
The Forum for Naga Reconciliation lauded the GPRN/NSCN’s support for Naga unity and urged for the abandonment of divisive policies. Isak Sumi, co-convenor of WC, NNPGs, lamented the fragmentation of the Naga movement, urging introspection on the unfulfilled 2007 unification pledge. Civil society organizations collectively called for unity among the Naga Political Groups, emphasizing forgiveness and collaboration for the greater Naga cause.
