Victory for Justice: Court Triumphantly Dismisses Charges Against Protesters in APPSC Paper Leak Scandal
Charges against protestors related to the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (AE Civil) paper leakage and the February 2023 bandh call were dismissed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Yupia. The court found the charges baseless and without merit. Nine individuals, primarily students including Tadak Nalo, a former leader of the Pan-Arunachal Joint Steering Committee, were arrested and charged. Nalo addressed the media, celebrating the judgment as a victory for their cause. He criticized the government for filing multiple chargesheets across seven police stations, including Itanagar, Naharlagun-Nirjuli, and Doimukh, calling it a misuse of power aimed at suppressing dissent.
Over 15 FIRs have been filed against the group. Nalo urged the ruling to serve as a warning for pending charges against them and praised the justice system while condemning government tactics as harassment and a waste of time. He questioned the government’s actions for not withdrawing the case despite assurances to do so and described it as hypocritical and an abuse of power.
The legal proceedings reached Thursday’s decision after five hearings over ten months, with protestors initially charged under multiple IPC sections and the Prevention of Damage to Property Act. Nalo revealed that summons from two to three more police stations in the Itanagar Capital Region are awaited, further criticizing these actions as attempts to intimidate the protestors. The court’s decision marks a significant turning point in the protestors’ ongoing battle for justice.
