Guwahati: Despite the resumption of goods train services by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to Khongsang in Manipur, the region is teetering on the brink of a food shortage crisis. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has yet to deliver food grains to the state, exacerbating the scarcity across multiple districts.
Train services to Jiibam and Khongsang were previously halted in August due to landslides, track damage, and tunnel blockages, disrupting the rail transport of essential goods. However, NFR has now restored freight train operations to Khongsang, successfully delivering essential commodities.
Despite these efforts, the FCI has not started transporting much-needed food grains, leading to increased concern about looming shortages. As reported on November 21st, several FCI depots in Manipur, such as Sangaiprou in Imphal West, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Sawombung in Imphal East, are experiencing dangerously low stock levels, with supplies sufficient for only a few days.
For instance, Sangaiprou depot holds just 13.94% of its total capacity, equivalent to 17 days of stock, while Thoubal depot stands at 9.6% (5 days), Churachandpur at 5.30% (6 days), and Sawombung at 4.6% (9 days). With these figures, the fear of severe shortages is very real if the FCI does not act swiftly.
Authorities and residents in Manipur are now calling for urgent intervention from the FCI to expedite the transportation of food grains to prevent a potential crisis and ensure a stable supply across affected districts. The mounting pressure for immediate action underscores the critical nature of the state’s current situation.
