Cables drape the ruins of Bengaluru’s Central Telegraph Office, now silent since its closure in 2013 but once a symbol of British colonial power through the telegraph system. Berlin-based designer Iz Paehr and Bengaluru artist Biplab Mahato led a network walk through Cubbon Park, exploring connections between historical telegraph lines and natural mycorrhizal networks, which facilitate nutrient exchange among plants. Participants traced the intertwining of digital and organic networks, revealing how modern internet infrastructure is still shaped by colonial biases, with most submarine cable landings in the global North. This educational walk is part of Iz’s residency at NCBS, supported by the Goethe-Institut Bangalore, blending art with network science. Their upcoming exhibition, “Sticky Networks,” will showcase this exploration with artworks inspired by mycelium networks and telegraph history. The exhibition at NCBS will be held on November 22, 2024, from 5.30 to 7.00 p.m., inviting attendees to engage with multimedia installations and fabric works reflecting on historical and ecological connectivity.
