Transformative Talks: PM Modi’s Historic Bilateral Meetings with CARICOM Leaders Ignite Hope
Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a series of bilateral meetings with leaders from several Caricom member nations during the second India-Caricom Summit in Georgetown, Guyana. These discussions focused primarily on fostering deeper economic and strategic partnerships across various sectors.
In his meeting with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, Modi explored boosting trade linkages and enhancing ties in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and energy. Similar topics of cooperation were highlighted in discussions with Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, where they emphasized strengthening collaboration in IT, healthcare, and agriculture.
PM Modi’s dialogue with Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne underscored the potential for expanding relations in trade, Fintech, renewable energy, and addressing climate change. With Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Modi expressed gratitude for an honorary award and focused talks on science, technology, and climate change.
Discussions with The Bahamas’ Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis centered on bilateral ties, particularly in trade and climate change. Meanwhile, Trinidad & Tobago’s talks included the diversification of trade linkages in healthcare, education, and agriculture, marking the adoption of UPI and signing an MoU on agricultural processing as significant achievements.
In interactions with Suriname’s President Chan Santokhi, Modi reviewed relations in trade, technology, and energy, aiming to bolster cultural and people-to-people connections, while pledging ongoing support for development initiatives.
The summit, co-chaired by PM Modi and PM Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, the current CARICOM chair, demonstrated a collective commitment to enhancing India-Caricom relations. Modi proposed a seven-pillar initiative—C.A.R.I.C.O.M—to deepen collaboration in capacity building, agriculture, renewable energy, innovation, culture, ocean economy, and medicine.
This summit reaffirmed India’s dedication to strengthening ties with the Caribbean nations, with an aim to build a prosperous future for upcoming generations, fostering mutual growth and development across diverse sectors.
