Crucial Nyishi Students’ Union Election Kicks Off Amidst Rising Tensions and Unrest
Voting for the All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU) election commenced at 5 PM following a day marred by significant unrest. As the prominent organization representing Arunachal Pradesh’s largest tribe, ANSU’s election has become a focal point of intense debate.
Earlier, chaos erupted outside Siddhartha Hall, the election venue, when supporters of a disqualified candidate set tyres and a car ablaze. Their initially peaceful protest for nomination justice escalated into stone-pelting, threatening the election’s progression.
Capital Superintendent of Police, IPS Rohit Rajbir Singh, led efforts to regain order using a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and secure the election process. He confirmed that some protesters were detained and added that allegations implicate supporters of disqualified candidate Romesh Maga, although Maga denied such involvement, prompting investigation.
The turmoil is rooted in the rejection of Maga’s Vice President candidacy, with accusations of bias and unfair practices against the election committee. Former General Secretary Gora Rikam also criticized ex-President Nabam Dodum for election delays and influence.
Repeated disruptions and violent encounters have characterized the election process, including unsanctioned meetings with local authorities and candidates. In response, the Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and former ANSU leaders intervened, conducting meetings to ensure a peaceful election. Alongside heightened security, these efforts facilitated the commencement of polling at Siddhartha Hall, with over 6,000 students anticipated to vote for the union’s new leadership.
Authorities remain vigilant to prevent further incidents as voting continues. The election outcome will be pivotal for ANSU’s future, a key organization within Nyishi society. However, the pre-election violence underscores a pressing need for enhanced transparency and reform to rebuild stakeholder trust. Results are awaited in the coming days amid hopes for a peaceful resolution to this turbulent episode in ANSU’s history.
