Urgent Plea: Ao Senden’s Passionate Call for Swift Resolution of Naga Political Crisis to MoS Home | MorungExpress
During Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s visit to Mokokchung on November 19, the Ao Senden—a leading civil organization of the Ao Naga community—voiced its concerns over the prolonged Naga political negotiations, urging for an accelerated resolution based on the 2015 “Framework Agreement” with the NSCN (IM) and the 2017 “Agreed Position” with the Naga National Political Groups. The Senden criticized the negotiations as an endless exercise, highlighting challenges faced by Nagaland due to stalled talks and the emergence of multiple factions. It urged the Government of India not to recognize ceasefire agreements with new groups.
The Ao Senden strongly opposed the Government’s abrogation of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), which they argue restricts Nagas’ access to arable lands and forest resources, essential due to limited development along border areas. They urged both the central and state governments to reconsider the FMR’s withdrawal and proposed border fencing, which they described as “illogical.”
Additionally, the Ao Senden expressed shock over the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s (MoEFCC) decisions to repurpose forest land for an Assam Police Commando Battalion Camp and oil and gas exploration by Vedanta Limited. The organization accused the MoEFCC and the Assam Government of encroaching on traditional lands, insisting these approvals be rescinded and asserting that an on-site verification with all stakeholders is essential before any further decisions.
The Ao Senden warned of potential conflict if these issues remain unresolved, while emphasizing a desire to maintain amicable relations between Nagaland and Assam. They called on Minister Kumar to address these matters and ensure necessary actions are taken. The Ao Naga community, determined to protect their ancestral land, appealed for the restoration of harmony and preservation of their rights.
