Prasar Bharati, India’s public broadcaster, has unveiled its own OTT platform, Waves, aimed at providing comprehensive family entertainment. The app, branded as ‘Waves- Family Entertainment Ki Nayi Lehar,’ is readily available for both Android and iOS users. On offer are approximately 40 live channels, featuring widely recognized networks like B4U, ABZY, SAB Group, and 9X Media. Prominent news channels such as India Today, News Nation, Republic, ABP News, News24, and NDTV India are also part of the lineup. In addition, all channels from Doordarshan and Akashvani are included, though the platform currently lacks channels from some major broadcasters.
The live channels available include B4U Kadak, B4U Bhojpuri, B4U Music, B4U Movies, Pitaara Movies, PTC Punjabi Gold, PTC Punjabi, Dabang, 9X Jalwa, 9X Jhakaas, 9X Tashan, ABZY Movies, ABZY Dhakad, Mastii, Maiboli, and USPL. According to ET BrandEquity, the selection of these channels was driven by factors such as GRPs, reach, and trending popularity.
Waves provides an extensive mix of content, from news and regional programming to music and movies. Movie enthusiasts can enjoy titles like Aarakshan, One Day, The Impossible, and Alice Darling, while the platform also features TV shows, games, and a live events section. The official app launch is set for today in Goa at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
Previously, in August, Prasar Bharati extended invitations to TV channels to join its OTT platform. This initiative highlighted a novel revenue-sharing model where participating broadcasters receive 65% of ad revenue, while Prasar Bharati keeps 35%, aiming to draw more content creators and enhance the platform’s allure.
This strategic expansion marks a significant step in increasing Prasar Bharati’s digital footprint, offering viewers a dynamic and varied entertainment experience.
