Exclusive Breakthrough: Heartwarming Triumph as Elephant Gets Radio-Collared in Assam’s Baksa District
In a significant development in wildlife conservation, a tusker from a herd of about 50 elephants was fitted with a radio collar in Assam’s Baksa district on Monday. This initiative, led by the Assam forest department with collaboration from local authorities and law enforcement, aims to enhance the management of human-elephant conflicts in the region. The operation was performed by tranquilizing the elephant in Jartaluk, supported by expert veterinarians, forest officials, and biologists. The smart collaring project is supported by the SBI Foundation and Professor Curtis Griffin from the University of Massachusetts, under the coordination of Aaranyak, a noted biodiversity conservation organization in Northeast India.
Ashwini Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer of Assam State Zoo, spearheaded the veterinary team’s efforts in tranquilizing and collaring the elephant, emphasizing the use of necessary tools and medicines to ensure the procedure’s success. According to Kaushik Barua, a key figure in the operation, the primary goal of radio-collaring is to track the elephants’ movements and occupancy, which is vital for framing effective human-elephant conflict mitigation strategies.
Utilizing GPS-based satellite-radio telemetry, the collar will assist in understanding the elephant’s migration patterns and habitat preferences. It also offers an early warning mechanism to prevent potential conflicts. Dr. Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar, senior conservation scientist at Aaranyak, expressed that this scientific approach will enhance understanding of the elephants’ ecological habits and help in formulating improved conservation strategies. Aaranyak’s team has been closely monitoring the elephant for two months to ensure the successful implementation of the collaring initiative.
