Urgent Call for Unity: Acting VC of NEHU Pleads with Students to End Hunger Strike Amidst Meghalaya Crisis
The hunger strike by students at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya has marked its 15th day, with rising tensions persisting on campus. The protestors, consisting of students demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other officials, have drawn significant attention. Following Professor Shukla’s 14-day leave, Professor Nirmalendu Saha, the senior-most faculty member, has stepped in as Acting Vice-Chancellor.
In an effort to address the ongoing unrest, Professor Saha has urged the students to stay united while strongly advising them to end their hunger strike due to its detrimental health implications. He stressed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding both the education and health of the students, assuring that all administrative decisions are being made in their best interests.
To monitor the health statuses of the protesting students, medical teams have been on standby, regularly assessing the situation to ensure student well-being. Additionally, Professor Saha has engaged with key university stakeholders, including the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), and NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA), in an attempt to mediate the ongoing conflict and pave the way for a resolution.
The university administration has also initiated efforts to draft an internal report, to be submitted to the Ministry of Education, signifying an active pursuit of a structured response to the crisis.
As the hunger strike adds pressure on the university’s administration, the resolution of this deadlock remains critical. The students’ demands reflect deep-seated concerns, and the Acting VC’s appeal calls for an end to the protest, prioritizing the students’ health and academic continuation amidst the escalating situation.
