Revolutionary Milestone: IIT Guwahati Sparks Pride with India’s First Underwater Welding Certification Programme – Northeast News
Guwahati: A landmark initiative has been unveiled as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, alongside the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), successfully rolled out India’s first training and certification program focused on underwater welding and deep diving. This program marks a pivotal step toward enhancing India’s capability in underwater asset maintenance while cultivating a skilled workforce to bolster critical industries such as maritime, energy, and oil and gas.
Hosted at the Neel Diving Academy in Kochi, the program featured comprehensive theoretical and practical sessions delivered by experts from IRS and IIT Guwahati’s Technology Innovation Hub (TIH). It was strategically designed to address the increasing demands of the nation’s offshore sectors. Participants underwent extensive hands-on training in underwater welding, essential for maintaining offshore and maritime infrastructure, coupled with rigorous technical evaluations to hone their proficiency.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, highlighted the program’s significance, stating that this initiative uniquely merges academic rigor with hands-on expertise, addressing a crucial skills deficit in the maritime and energy sectors. He expressed pride in the collaboration with IRS to foster innovation and capability-building that advance India’s underwater maintenance capabilities.
Adding to this sentiment, Prof. N R Mandal, Chair of the Technology Innovation and Development Foundation at IIT Guwahati, affirmed the success of the program as a testament to their dedication to nurturing specialized maritime skills. He noted that this initiative aligns seamlessly with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) vision by promoting local expertise in essential sectors.
Dr. Asokendu Samanta, Divisional Head of R&D at IRS, emphasized the program’s role in equipping the workforce with critical underwater wet welding and deep diving skills, vital for the maintenance of India’s oil, gas, and shipping infrastructure. This pioneering effort is set to fortify India’s position in underwater asset management on a global scale.
